Instructor: Assignments: Medical Language Lab

To access the full list of assignments with start/due dates and participation rates, select the "View All Modules" button, or click the ASSIGNMENTS tab at the top right of the page.

 

Here you can preview all the module assignments that your students will complete.

Click Details next to a module to view its contents. Each module in Medical Language Lab contains multiple activities. The activities within each module can be customized by your instructor and may vary depending on the text. You will potentially see the following activities: Read, Watch, Critical Listening, Response, Generation, Pronounce, Practice, and Review.

Each module begins with a Read link, which links students to that chapter in the eBook.

 

Next, students Watch a suite of video content that covers the core concepts of the module.

 

 

 

Critical Listening

Critical Listening Exercises are based upon an audio recording prompt. Students will listen to a recorded conversation and then answer a set of identification questions.

 

Students will listen to the Audio Recording (1) to familiarize themselves with the content. Then, they click the "Continue to Question" button (2) to answer questions associated with the audio.

Multiple-choice questions will follow, based upon the audio recording students have just listened to. After submitting answers, students will be able to review results, replay the audio, view a transcript, or try again.

Response

Response Exercises are also based upon an audio recording. For most Response Exercises, students will listen to the Audio Recording (1) to familiarize themselves with the content. Then, they click the "Continue to Question" button (2) to answer questions associated with the audio.

For a Pronunciation Exercise (in certain texts), students click the Record button (1) and then read the statement precisely as it is written. Then, students will hit the "Submit" button (2) to submit their recording and be scored automatically based upon how well they pronounced the given statement.

Generation 

Generation Exercises aren't automatically graded; they're subjective and therefore must be graded by the instructor. There are two types of Generation Exercises: Audio and Text.

 

Audio Generation

These exercises ask students to record themselves saying a sentence or two using the appropriate medical terminology.

Students should also avoid using Internet Explorer. Desktop and laptop computers with Mac OS or Windows 7,8,10 are generally supported, with Google Chrome being the recommended browser. Chromebooks are supported. iPads may be supported with the latest versions of iOS.

Text Generation

Students are asked to write a sentence or two using medical terminology.

Remember that Generation Exercises are not graded automatically, so you will not see a grade in the Gradebook for these exercises until you have evaluated the submission and assigned a grade.

Pronounce

“Pronounce” will include exercises for students to practice the pronunciation of medical terms. Students will select the microphone icon to record. At the end of the assignment, students will receive phonetic feedback.  

 

Practice

Practice activity types contain a varied collection of exercises that offer additional learning opportunities for students. Some are reported to the Gradebook, while others are not (such as Flash Cards, Crossword).

Review Assignments

Review Assignments (for certain texts) are a Module Test for each module, and will begin with an assessment and then generate additional review assignments for students based upon their strengths and weaknesses.

Assignments View

On your main Dashboard page, the What's Next? panel provides a glimpse of current and upcoming assignments (3 at a time) showing what percentage of students has begun to work on the assigned module.

Testbank Assignments

You can also view Test Bank Assignments by clicking the TestBank tab.

On the TestBank tab, you can select "Create Practice Quiz" or "Create Test Assignment." Practice Quizzes and Test Assignments can be created before the course starts or after the class has started.
